Course Objectives

The overall purpose of the course is to provide the necessary performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to conduct an internal EMS Performance Audit against management system audit processes detailed within ISO 19011 and provide an overview of the Environmental Management System Standard ISO 14001:2015 which an organization can be audited against as an external benchmark.

What You Will Learn

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand and describe the role of an internal audit in the maintenance and improvement of an effective Environmental Management System (EMS) and the responsibilities of the internal auditor
  • Demonstrate the processes involved with planning an audit, initiating an audit, preparing for an audit, conducting on-site audit activities, reporting on audit findings and conducting post-audit activities as outlined within ISO 19011
  • Describe the activities and processes associated with planning, performing and reporting effective internal EMS audits including developing the tools to gather environmental performance information and data, and ensuring liaison with all relevant parties based on the requirements of ISO 19011
  • Understand and apply audit and environmental terminologies, principles and techniques in assessment and management of impacts, management of environmental compliance obligations and how these link to the intended outcomes of an EMS
  • Outline the personal and interpersonal skills required to conduct a management systems audit
  • Demonstrate the appropriate oral, written and non-verbal communication techniques that are desirable for lead management systems auditors
  • Explain the purpose and structure of ISO 14001:2015 and the interrelation with the plan-do-check-act methodology on which it is based inclusive of process based inputs and outputs against Environmental Policy commitments
  • Conduct an audit against components of an Environmental Management System and evaluate the overall effectiveness and compliance regarding the EMS meeting its intended outcomes
  • Examine an EMS against the audit criteria ISO 14001 to determine conformance with planned arrangements and the effectiveness of the organization’s approaches to managing environmental aspects and risk factors
  • Demonstrate the reporting of the results with an internal audit, including writing valid, factual and value-adding reports
  • Explain how non-conformity may be resolved and the steps that should be taken to follow up and effectively close out corrective and preventive actions issues raised by an internal EMS audit
